June 2008

I have taken baby Nueri to Santo Domingo two times this month. June 3rd he was diagnosed with Fallot's Tetrology (or Tetrology de Fallot in Spanish). This is also called "blue baby syndrome". The same problem as Iriana and Grey.

During our first visit the end of February the doctor who always attends to my kids was not at the hospital. Her child was very sick and hospitalized. A young pediatric cardiologist attended to us and gave us her diagnosis. She said to make an appointment when Dra. T can see baby Neuri. Dra. T is back at the hospital but is suffering from medical problems herself. Anyway, after doing an echocardiogram on June 3rd she told us that Nueri's case is very severe Tetrology de Fallot. He is only getting 57% oxygen to his heart.

She said a group of doctors are coming in July from the Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Can you believe how coincidental? I spent a lot of time at this hospital as a kid.

Anyway, she is bumping one or two other children that are also scheduled for open heart surgery in order to get him on the schedule. She urged the young mother to keep him cool, keep him from crying and take good care of him. Otherwise, he may not live to see the doctors.

We went back to Santo Domingo on June 17th for testing to prepare for the surgery. He had to be sedated to complete all the tests. This little tike is also on heart medication. He just turned one year old on June 10th. All the results will be forwarded to the doctors in Columbus. We must go back to Santo Domingo on July 3rd when Dra. T will do a final evaluation for submission to them. She will tell us at that time the dates the doctors will be here. In the meantime, we must line up 8 prospective people for blood donations. I am happy to donate but the doctors here will not accept blood from women.
