December 2002

I am trying desperately to finish as much as possible and be home by Christmas. The campaign for the boy with the closed esophogas has been high and low.

Last night Josue and I were at the high school with photos of the boy and received about 600 pesos from the kids in school. Nena, Raiza, Corina and others are helping to collect money. First the boy needs mass nutrition. Image Loading...He is anemic and the surgery cannot be done until he is stronger. So, the donations I receive now will buy food that the mother can prepare liquid nutrition. In the private hospital they can give him IV nutrition but not in the public hospital. I have been to Santo Domingo and Santiago with the father of the boy on different days to receive the medical records from the doctors. Last Friday I took the mother and boy to the public hospital in Puerto Plata where the doctor who helped with the surgeries for the women did an examination and wrote a letter explaining the there are not any facilities in Puerto Plata that can provide this type of surgery. Nor is there a hospital in Santiago.

Just this morning I met a man from Martha's Vineyard whose son is coming on Saturday for vacation. His son is an oralmaxiofacial surgeon in New York and performs extraordination surgeries on noses, throats, ears. The man (and I) want his son to exam the boy so I can learn in english just what type of procedure he needs. As I understand what the spanish doctors are telling me is that the esophogas must be removed and replaced with intestine of the boy. I just never really know for sure because of the language barrier. I have been busy at Corina's house every night making tickets for sale to the people for 5 pesos in the schools, 10, 20, 50 and 100 increments.
