Rainbow Families Foundation Newsletter - June 2002
June 2002

The volunteers bring me food and I buy water by the 5 gallon containers for $18 pesos at the supermarket.  Of course, the volunteers do not have my stamina, however, the days are hot and the facility is not air conditioned, just a couple paddle fans but when the power goes out then there is no air circulation.  I only bring two volunteers at a time because it gets distracting when more people are helping and everyone is talking and things don't get done as quickly.  It's better this way.

When I go to internet cafe I spend a lot of time deleting junk mail messages and only have enough time to write quickie notes. Thanks so much for your call. It really made my day. It is difficult to use the internet at Grimaldy's brother's business. He sits at the desk where the computer is to do his work. It seems his business is good. He gets work from the school across the street too, even if it's just to make copies.

Yesterday took a break and went to Santiago with a friend. Her sister lives there and has a very nice house for Dominican standards. Back to the grind today but wanted to make contact with the person from England. He's going to be in Punta Cana. I think it is quite far from here but will check around to see how long to get there. Not sure to equivalent of 2,000 pounds in US dollars so I'll have to check on that too.

I have been very busy myself with people coming from Canada, England and the U.S. bringing donations. I have to meet with a guy from California about possible funding for RFF that his organization is considering. We'll see what happens. Also have been working to get 20 plus computers shipped from Wisconsin. A lady emailed to me that some students got the computers and want to donate them to the DR. I asked for a listing of everything they want to ship but they have not replied. They received a donation from a shipping company to deliver them anywhere in the U.S. I was able to find a man from Canada who is shipping half a container of windows I think. He agreed to donate the other half but I have been waiting to get the listing of computer equipment. It has not been easy. If I don't hear from her soon I will miss the opportunity for the space on the container.
